. romney was greeted with a standing occasion and seized the oprtunity to repeat one of his favorite zingers ad nauseam. >> trickle down government. trickle down government. trickle down government. trickle down government will not create the jobs americans need. >> trickle down government, zing. the crowd there clearly energized by romney's debate performance last night and obama's senior adviser david axelrod praised it as well suggesting it was oscar-worthy, though not worthy of the white house. due to some basic problems with simple veracity. >> i'm not looking for a $5 trillion tax cut. i can't understand how you can cut medicare $716 billion for current recipients of medicare. pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan. an unelected board, appointed board who are going to decide what kind of treatments you ought to have. >> not true, not true, not true, not true. and since mr. romney got the last word at the debate last night, why don't we give the last word today to the president. >> he knows full well that we don't want what he's been selling for the last year. so gove

far to turn back now. >> you heard the president. it's no day to talk down the economy to score political points. but shadowing the president in virginia, mitt romney waited nine minutes deep into his scintillating stump speech before even mentioning the big news of the day, delivering it like a speech at a funeral. >> there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month, and the unemployment rate, as you know, to this year has come down very, very slowly. of course, even those that have jobs are having tough times. >> okay. but give mr. romney credit because he actually admits the unemployment rate did come down. unlike prominent conservative jack welch who tweeted this morning, unbelievable jobs numbers. these chicago guys will do anything. can't debate, so change numbers. okay. tuesday he was a ruthless race baiter. yesterday he was a feckless delivery boy. today he's don corleone, and there's more where that came from. congressman west, take it away. >> you are alleging specifically that the president is engaging in a cover-up of the data. you are saying that the adm

candidates hunkered down in last-minute debate preparations. mitt romney is out in the mile high city carb loading at chipotle today. >> how are you doing? >> are you ready for tomorrow? >> hi there. getting there. how are you? >> getting there. just giving him another six years. indeed, you know what mitt romney's been working hard, maybe fighting for a little air when he goes on a nostalgic riff. in this case the rocky mountains are just the right height. >> when avis boy my mom and dad used to read to me from a book called "men to match my mountains." perhaps we should change the title to "men and women to match my mountains" because right here men and women have matched the mountains of colorado. >> he's really working on the zingers. we see what you did there, mitt, adding women into the mix. nice. anything to do with the president's 18-point lead with women putting him four points above romney nationwide? no, i'm sure not. by the way, the same poll shows voters expect 54% to 28% that the president will win the dae bates. the president doesn't seem too worried. delivering pizza to a n

of this down. >> well, i guess that's why governor romney has not been more specific and that's because he has no idea how he would actually do this in the first place. if there were a way to do this, you can be sure yhe'd be out there saying it. all along romney has been getting pummeled for not having the specifics. yes, he can have all the zingers he wants. he can say whatever has been wrong, there's a good substantive case to be made against president obama, but he's never presented anything in the way of a detailed alternative that people can get their arms around. even at a paul ryan event this morning, a woman, a supporter got up in the crowd and said where are the details, what are you guys actually going to do? forget about his opponents' demanding it, his supporters are demanding it, saying give us something to vote for. >> ron, being perfectly hoppest, and you have already disclosed you helped prepare governor romney in 2008, are you not disappointed that he hasn't been more specific and more detailed, honestly? >> no, honestly i'm not. >> you're not? >> i'm not dispointed. it's abo

up a little bit. i don't think we're going to see those polls turn upside down as chris christie said. >> anna marie, the romney campaign is distributing leaflets promising the people of virginia that he will crack down on lyme disease. now, this is another example of the bold leadership they promise that they would take on the big issues. forget about explaining how their economic plan would work and what deductions and loopholes they'd close. there's a focus here on lyme disease. can you explain that? >> well, this is not the kind of small bore detail we were hoping for, is it, martin? and i guess we do know there's been some confusion in the romney campaign about what exactly constitutes a parasite. at least in this case they've gotten it exactly right. and they aren't talking about half of america and getting it wrong. you know, this is probably just a transparent attempt to appeal to sue sur ban women perhaps, some mothers who are dealing with deers and worried about their kids. i can't really fault him for the sort of -- the motivation behind this. lyme disease is a serious thin

as if in ohio the bain capital message has sunk in. virginia, florida, the white vote will go to romney. >> what struck you about that apparent contradiction in the polling? >> i think you saw a little bit of that bounce kind of come down after the post-convention. you're seeing it sort of return to a place where it was very tight. you saw aa shift among independents in florida, which is what made up a lot of that shift. the striking thing about all three polls is how few persuadable voters there are. that's what these debates are usually about but it may wind up be something to turn out the base and fire up some of their people. >> one of the issue, i put this to both of you, one of the problems with mitt romney's campaign, which has been critiqued by those on the left and right, his friends and enemies, is that he lacks specificity. when he comes to the specifics for ordinary americans, like whether they're going to lose their mortgage interest tax relief, what does he do tonight, having spent the last two years not giving us any detail? . it's interesting on that because i think the real issu

romney. >> right. professor reich, paul ryan is known for being an encyclopedia of numbers but can he effectively counter headlines like this one today, "gm to add 2,000 jobs in michigan"? if this race comes down to ohio and the auto rescue plays a major role there, that's a tough headline to counter for mr. ryan, isn't it? >> it certainly is. and what people in ohio and in the midwest generally know is the auto bailouts were critically important. ryan and romney said no to the auto bailouts and the president and the vice president said yes in the face of a lot of criticism and they have been proven right. paul ryan is an ideologue. he has a record and joe biden can pick on that record. joe biden can say to paul ryan, that $716 billion that you and romney keep on saying we are robbing from medicare, we are not robbing from medicare. we're actually extending the life of medicare. you, ryan, you use that 7$716 billion in your budget plan and yet you put it in there based upon you actually turning medicare into a voucher program. ryan has got to respond. ryan is a detail person. i think
